Finally the WWDC 2023 keynote is over and we have a lot to talk about. This worldwide developer conference is one of the most anticipated events of all Apple Fans.
In our recent post, where we talked about 5 big reveals we’re hoping to see at WWDC 2023 there were some positive guesses that came out true like the new MacOS and Apple Vision Pro. Let’s read through and see what all what actually got released and what’s most exciting.

Watch the WWDC 2023 Keynote

Macbook Air 15-inch

The new Macbook Air is the thinnest 15-inch laptop to date as claimed by Apple, weighing at only 3.3 pounds. The Air uses last year’s M2 chip with an 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU. The RAM can be configured upto 24 GB and storage upto 2TB. It has a MagSafe charger and as the previous gen Air only two thunderbolt/USB-C ports.

Apple is making a bold claim of providing a remarkable 18-hour battery life on a single charge, and once again, following the trend set by previous Air models, there is no built-in fan, resulting in a “silent design,” as Apple likes to refer to it. Evidently, the company does not anticipate users exerting the same level of demanding tasks as they would on the Pro models.

The issue of screen size has consistently been a matter of contention for the Air lineup. However, it is also widely recognized that certain compromises must be made in the pursuit of enhanced portability. The 15-inch Air occupies a fascinating space within the constantly evolving MacBook series, taking the finest attributes of Apple’s premium laptop and expanding upon them.

This design approach ensures a reasonably convenient experience despite the large display, but once again, it is essential to acknowledge that the notion of portability becomes relative when dealing with a 15-inch device.

Mac Studio

The Mac Studio, Apple’s diminutive yet potent desktop computer, has received an announcement of a product update at the WWDC event. This refresh entails an upgrade to the silicon, wherein the M1 Max and M1 Ultra will be replaced by the all-new M2 Max and M2 Ultra.

Regarding the physical design, existing Mac Studio owners will find the form factor quite familiar. It bears a resemblance to a towering Mac Mini, standing approximately three times taller than its smaller counterpart.

However, the key differentiating factor lies in the enhanced capabilities provided by the new chip. Apple’s M2 Max boasts a remarkable 20% surge in performance when compared to its predecessor, the M1 Max. Furthermore, alongside this product unveiling, Apple introduces the M2 Ultra to the audience.

The M2 Ultra signifies yet another notable leap forward, delivering a staggering 20% increase in CPU performance and an impressive 30% boost in GPU performance in comparison to the M1 Ultra. Moreover, the neural engine demonstrates a remarkable 40% acceleration in its processing capabilities.

With the M2 Ultra, customers will have the option to harness the power of up to 192GB of RAM (unified memory). Apple claims that the Mac Studio equipped with the M2 Ultra exhibits performance that is six times faster than the swiftest Intel-based Mac available.

Turning our attention to connectivity, Apple has amplified the video bandwidth, enabling users to connect an 8K display with a rapid refresh rate. Additionally, for those willing to make a substantial investment, it is now possible to connect up to six Studio Displays XDR to the same Mac Studio.

The new iteration of Mac Studio commences at a price point of $1,999 and will become available for purchase on June 13th.

Mac Pro

Designed for professionals at the top of their field, the Mac Pro by Apple is equipped with the cutting-edge M2 Ultra processor. This powerhouse boasts a 24-core CPU and up to 76-core GPUs, delivering a performance up to seven times faster than the initial lineup of the older Intel-based Mac Pro.

Thanks to the new processor, the computer boasts an impressive RAM capacity, supporting up to 192GB of unified memory. This is a significant improvement over the M1 Ultra processors. Apple claims that the system is suitable for training AI models.

While this may be true, it’s worth noting that such models are typically trained using arrays of computers in the cloud, rather than on a desktop computer. Nonetheless, if you work with video, 3D graphics, or high-end music production, having more power is always exciting.

The new Mac Pro includes all the features you’d expect from a top-tier computer, such as eight Thunderbolt ports and six fourth-generation PCIe slots. While these may not be easily understood by most users, they play a crucial role in TV and live event production. Expansion cards are essential for quickly capturing and outputting content at high speeds.

Starting at a price of $6,999, the Apple Mac Pro may seem expensive. However, it’s important to note that the final cost can increase significantly once you add all the additional features and customization options you desire.

M2 Ultra

The new M2 Ultra is built using 5nm technology and has 134 billion transistors. It will feature 24 CPU cores, up to 76 GPU cores (with a 60-core option as well), and a 32-core Neural Engine. The CPU is made up of 16 high-performance cores and eight high-efficiency cores.

One significant change is that the M2 Ultra supports up to 192GB of unified memory, with a memory bandwidth of 800GB/s.

All these improvements mean that the new chip has a CPU performance that is up to 20% faster than the M1 Ultra, a GPU performance that is up 30%, and a Neural Engine that is 40% faster than the M1 Ultra. According to Apple, this level of power is sufficient to train and run large language models without the need for a dedicated GPU.

The new chip will also have the capability to support up to six Pro Display XDRs, which amounts to over 100 million pixels.

Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies, Johny Srouji, stated, “The M2 Ultra delivers incredible performance and capabilities for our professional users, catering to their demanding workflows, while still maintaining the exceptional power efficiency of Apple silicon.

With significant performance improvements in the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine, along with high memory bandwidth in a single system-on-chip (SoC), the M2 Ultra is the most powerful chip ever created for a personal computer.”

Another highlight of iPadOS 17 is the introduction of new native apps specifically designed for the iPad. One of these apps is the Health app, which was previously only available on the iPhone. With the upcoming iPadOS 17, users will be able to access the Health app on their iPads.

This means they can view their health data, such as electrocardiogram results, on a larger screen. Moreover, the Health app ensures the privacy of users’ data by securely syncing it across their iPad, iPhone, Apple Watch, and compatible third-party apps and devices, all accessible from one centralized location.

For developers, iPadOS 17 brings the inclusion of HealthKit, opening up new possibilities to create health and fitness experiences for iPad users. Users will now have more space to view health metrics, prescriptions, lab tests, and other related information.

In addition to these health-related updates, Apple has also announced their focus on mental health. They plan to introduce new features for the Apple Watch and iPhone to address this important aspect of overall well-being.

Furthermore, iPadOS 17 brings a feature called Live Collaboration, which aims to enhance the experience of working with PDFs. Using advanced machine learning technology, the operating system can identify fields within a PDF, making it easier and quicker for users to fill them out.

One of the new features on the desktop is widgets, which are borrowed from the mobile side of things. These widgets adapt to your usage and don’t take up too much screen space when you’re working on something else. They are interactive, allowing you to perform tasks like selecting images directly from the widget window.

Another addition is the game mode, designed to minimize distractions while playing the growing collection of Apple Silicon titles. Apple has also introduced a new game porting development kit to assist in bringing existing games to the operating system. The company hopes to be taken more seriously in the gaming space, and even Death Stranding, a popular game, was discussed by its creator, Kojima.

Apple seems to be focusing more on teleconferencing as well, with improved webcams and new features. One of these features is an overlay that removes the speaker’s background and places them in front of a dynamic backdrop. There are also new effects like fireworks. These features are compatible with popular teleconferencing apps like FaceTime, Zoom, Teams, and more.

The new desktop browser, Safari, is also receiving enhancements such as improved wallpapers, including a picture of Sonoma. Safari will have new features like a lock for private browsing and the ability to add web apps to the system’s dock.

The public beta version of macOS 14 is expected to be released in the coming weeks, with the full version becoming available later this year.

Updates to AirPods

The noise cancellation features on Apple’s AirPods are really handy when it comes to blocking out the sound of crying babies on airplanes. However, if you’re using noise cancellation while walking down the street, it’s important to be more aware of your surroundings.

Luckily, with the new Adaptive Audio feature, AirPods can combine active noise cancellation mode and transparency mode, making it easier to use noise cancellation while on the move. By utilizing machine learning, the AirPods will try to determine when it detects unnecessary sounds (like a loud lawnmower) versus sounds you would probably want to hear (such as a friend trying to talk to you).

One advantage of using AirPods is that they can effortlessly connect to all your Apple devices, like your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. However, sometimes transitioning between devices isn’t completely seamless, especially if you’re using multiple Apple devices simultaneously. In an exciting announcement for AirPods owners, Apple has revealed that it is working on enhancing the automatic switching feature.

“Transitioning from a conference call on your Mac to your favorite playlist on your iPhone is now much quicker, ensuring you don’t miss a beat,” stated Apple.
